  • Can We Say Bye to Plastic?HBNU President Thinks SoBy Lee Ye-rim Editor-in-chief, Junior of ChineseLast summer, President Oh Yong-jun of HBNU joined the Bye Bye Plastic Campaign. Launched by the Ministry of Environment in August 2023, the Bye Bye Plastic Challenge aims to reduce unnecessary plastic use in daily life and promote the use of reusable items. This campaign has spread nationwide and involves leaders and citizens from various sectors. The participation of influential figures, such as university presidents, has helped amplify the campaigns impact across society.Participation in the Bye Bye Plastic Challenge is straightforward. Participants either take a photo of themselves waving both hands, symbolizing goodbye, or record a video pledging to reduce plastic use. The photo or video is then posted on social media, including the essential hashtags #MinistryOfEnvironment, #ByeByePlastic, and #BBP, along with a nomination of the next participant. Oh Yong-jun, President of HBNU, was nominated by President Park Sung-kyu of Chongshin University to join this challenge. In his message, he stated, Recently, South Korea has experienced unusually early heat, and the period of high temperatures is getting longer each year. Global warming and abnormal climate conditions are not the issues of any specific region or country but are global crises. I will begin by reducing my own use of disposable products and will strive to spread this practice to those around me.Due to the simplicity of participating in the challenge, various prominent figures such as politicians, celebrities, and environmental activists have actively joined, widely spreading its message. They use their platforms to raise awareness about the importance of ecological protection and introduce 10 practical steps that ordinary citizens can follow to reduce plastic use in their daily lives.10 Practical Habits for the Earth: Bye-Bye Plastic Pledge1. Use a reusable shopping bag when grocery shopping.2. Choose reusable cooling packs when ordering fresh produce.3. Reduce the use of wet wipes and plastic straws.4. Avoid buying products with excessive packaging.5. Choose second-hand or recycled products.6. Use reusable items instead of disposable products.7. Decline unnecessary plastic when ordering delivery.8. Avoid using unnecessary plastic bags.9. Shop at packaging-free refill stores.10. Take responsibility for properly sorting and disposing of the products you use.President Oh Yong-juns participation in this campaign holds significant meaning for HBNU students. A university is not just a place for academic learning but also a space where students cultivate a sense of responsibility for creating a better world. This challenge serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of environmental protection and offers practical ways for students to take action. The Bye Bye Plastic Challenge is not a one-time campaign but an ongoing movement for environmental protection. President Oh Yong-juns participation will raise awareness among HBNU students and the local community about the severity of plastic pollution. It will also encourage more people to join the efforts to tackle environmental issues. How about HBNU students joining this challenge and contributing to significant change through small actions in their daily lives? Each minor effort to reduce plastic will play a vital role in creating a better future. The Bye Bye Plastic Challenge will continue until the day comes when unnecessary plastic is no longer used.

  • University Running LeagueBy Jeong Eui-seok Reporter, Sophomore of Information and Communication EngineeringIn recent years, running has firmly established itself as a global fitness trend. According to the BBC, the 2025 London Marathon saw a record-breaking number of applicants, with over 840,000 people registering, significantly surpassing last years numbers. This trend is not unique to London. Fast Company, a U.S. business news outlet, reports that 96 percent of various races organized by New Yorks non-profit group, New York Road Runners (NYRR), were sold out in 2023 due to high demand. In South Korea, running has also become more familiar to the public, with celebrities sharing their running routines on social media. But why has running become so popular? Fast Company links the rise to the pandemic. With indoor workouts limited, many people have turned to running. It's an outdoor activity that does not need much equipment and is easy to start. This shift has continued post-pandemic, further cementing running's place as a popular sport. The Rise and Growth of the University Running LeagueRunning's popularity is also thriving at universities. Across various universities in South Korea, numerous running crews have emerged, supported by the running craze. Examples are Seoul National Universitys Dalisha and Korea Universitys KUTR. HBNU is no exception. In 2021, a running crew named Heartbeat was founded, and it has been keeping well so far. Riding this wave of enthusiasm, the University Running League was launched in 2023, creating a platform where students can connect and compete, transcending their schools and local communities. The University Running League started with its first season in the summer of 2023, followed by the second season in the fall, and the third in the summer of 2024. At the time of writing, all three leagues have been completed, with more planned for the future. In the first season, 21 universities participated, and over the following seasons, 35 universities joined together. The scoring system of the University Running League has evolved with each season. In the first season, 20 runners were selected per crew, and the total distance covered by each team was compared to determine the winner. However, starting from the second season, a Mission Run was introduced. This new system removed the limit on the number of participants per crew, and the final score was calculated by adding the Mission Run score to the total distance score and then dividing it by the number of participants. The Mission Run is divided into beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels, with points awarded for completing the set running schedules within the league period. Recently, the difficulty levels have been further subdivided to include beginner, intermediate, advanced, and expert categories, and the scoring system has been improved for fairness. Awards are presented to the top three crews in the crew rankings and the top three male and female runners in the individual rankings.HBNU in the University Running LeagueThe University Running League is more than just a competition to test running skills between universities. Its main purpose is to provide a space for students with a shared passion for running to meet, build friendships, and connect through their love of the sport. As such, the University Running League organizes various events that bring together crews from different universities, such as the Opening Ceremony, Campus Run, and Closing Ceremony. At the Opening Ceremony, running crews from all over the country gather to introduce themselves and take time in training sessions led by professional running coaches. The Campus Run is an event where crews from different universities gather at one campus to run such as Kyung Hee University Run, Dankook University Run, or KAIST Run. The Closing Ceremony is a chance to wrap up six months of running activities, celebrate the achievements of participants, and host the University Running Leagues awards ceremony. As a founding member of the University Running League, HBNU has consistently participated in the league. It has a strong presence among the many universities participating in the University Running League. In Season 1 of 2023, the university ranked 2nd in the crew rankings and secured 1st and 3rd in the mens rankings. Although it faced some challenges in Season 2 of 2023 due to changes in the scoring system, it made a successful comeback in Season 1 of 2024, reclaiming 2nd place in the crew rankings and 1st place in the mens rankings. Now, lets meet two key members of the HBNUs running crew, Heartbeat, and hear their stories.Noh Yun-ho, Junior of Japanese Language1st place in the men's rankings for the first season of 2023 and the first season of 2024Q. You have set several impressive records in the University Running League, including 1st place in the mens rankings for the first season of 2023 and 2024. We heard that your mindset was particularly determined for the 2024 semester. What was your approach going into that season?A. In the first season of 2023, I ran over 800 km in one month and secured 1st place in the individual rankings. However, in the second season, I didnt place in the top ranks. I think I was physically and mentally exhausted, and my passion for running had faded a bit. Then, at the awards ceremony for Season 2, seeing someone else in the 1st place spot made mixed emotions in me. I thought, That 1st place should be mine, but at the same time, I could fully appreciate how hard that runner must have worked, so I gave them a big round of applause. Also, I decided to reclaim the top position the following year, and that determination carried me through this season.Q. Do you have any memorable moments from participating in the University Running League?A. The most memorable part of this season was the time spent with my Heartbeat members. During the competition period, I ran a lot with them. When we met, we shouted Lets do this! together before starting our runs, and motivated each other with words of support, which gave me a lot of strength. After running, we would share meals and talk endlessly about the University Running League. Sometimes we wondered, Can we get 1st place? Can we beat the Seoul National University team? and How much more do we need to run to get 1st place as a team? That enthusiasm pushed everyone, including me, to run even harder. Running alone sometimes felt tedious, and time seemed too slow, but running with my teammates made it a fun and meaningful experience.Q. How has the University Running League positively impacted you? What does the University Running League mean to you?A. The University Running League has had two major positive impacts on me. First, it gave me the chance to have various unique experiences. After achieving 1st place in the individual rankings, I received a modeling offer from Musinsa, and I even got an interview with JTBC. These experiences were not something I could easily come by, so they were very meaningful to me. Second, the University Running League helped me grow as a person. By working hard and achieving good results in the competition, I gained confidence that I could accomplish anything if I put in the effort. These experiences significantly boosted my self-esteem and helped me grow. For me, the University Running League was more than just about running. It was an important life experience and a personal challenge.Kim Hyun-woo, Senior of Creative Convergence EngineeringPresident of HBNUs running crew, HeartbeatQ. Do you have any memorable moments from participating in the University Running League?A. I have been participating in the University Running League since the first season, yet the most recent season stands out the most. At the start of this season, my goal was to place in the top 5 of the mens ranking. I set this goal after watching Yun-ho take 1st place, which made me want to achieve something special before graduating. So, I was determined to make it into the top 5 this time. I set a daily goal of running 20 km, split into 10 km in the morning and 10 km in the afternoon. In the first week, I ran a total of 122 km, and I reached 4th place in the individual ranking by the end of the week. Although I dropped in the ranking later due to an injury, I still felt incredibly proud to have been in the top 5 during that first week. It was a rewarding experience that showed me I could achieve my goals if I set my mind.Q. How has the University Running League positively impacted you?A. One of the most memorable and positive experiences for me was when our Heartbeat club worked together to finish 2nd place in the University Running League twice. The time we spent running towards a shared goal and supporting each other was precious to me. Regardless of the rankings, these memories have become truly special to me. Im proud that we placed 2nd twice among more than 30 universities, and I believe that being a part of this running crew will always be a source of pride and cherished memories.Q. What does the Heartbeat running crew mean to you?A. As I mentioned earlier, Heartbeat has been a special part of my 20s, creating unforgettable memories. I have made great friends here, achieved good results in the University Running League, and even completed several marathons as part of Heartbeat. For these reasons, Heartbeat will always be a club I remember fondly for a long time.Have you ever heard of the term Runners High? It refers to the intense feeling of happiness that runners sometimes experience during a run. If you are thinking about getting into running, why not step outside and give it a try right now? Or, if you already enjoy running, how about representing your school as a participant in the University Running League? Running with students from various universities and sharing the joy of a Runners High can be a new challenge and an incredible experience. The sense of accomplishment and fulfillment you gain from running is a unique experience that is hard to compare to anything else. • HBNU Since 1927By Park Seok-joo Reporter, Junior of ArchitectureEstablished in 1927, HBNU is looking forward to celebrating its 100th anniversary with 97 years of history and tradition. Lets take a look at the history of the university and how it became what it is today.Ethnic Education - Training of Specialized Technicians (1927-1984)HBNU began with the establishment of the Hongseong Public Industrial Training School in Hongseong, Chungcheongnam-do on 20 May 1927, when the people of Chungcheong province joined forces to promote national education. The school was relocated to Samseong-dong, Dong-gu, Daejeon in 1932 with the Chungnam Provincial Office to Daejeon, and despite the harsh conditions of the Japanese colonization, the school endeavored to cultivate human resources with the vital mission of national education. Hongseong Industrial Training School was reorganized as Daejeon Industrial High School in 1951. It grew to be Koreas representative higher education institution responsible for enlightened education in the modernization era. Daejeon Industrial High School was reorganized into Daejeon Industrial College in 1979 to train specialized technical personnel for industrialized societies. It was one of the pillars of Koreas rapid growth and is now HBNU.Establishing university identity and campus rexss-location.(1984-2001)Following the trend of lifelong education, Daejeon Industrial College was reorganized into a four-year Daejeon Open University*. As a result of the efforts made by all members of the university to establish a vision for the development of the university, the school gradually became a comprehensive university. At the same time, the school moved from Hyun-am, where it had been located for more than 60 years, to Yu-Seong Campus, which marked a major turning point in its innovative development.*Open university: A school established to provide access to college courses for those who do not have the opportunity for a normal college education.High-Tech Hanbat University, to the light of the world (2001-2012)On March 1, 2001, the university changed its name to Hanbat University and was selected for major national policy projects, such as the Industry-Academia Cooperation Center University Development Project, the best University in the National University Ranking, and the National University Innovation Evaluation, and received a large amount of funding. Furthermore, the university has developed into an internationally competitive university with the vision of becoming a Global standard university for industry-academia-innovation. In addition, with the changing educational environment, Hanbat University has challenged the path of innovation by becoming a general university that fosters regional leaders with creative capabilities.Transitioning to a general university, and current HBNU (2012-)HBNU became a general university on 1 March 2012 through a series of challenges and innovations. Cultivating local leaders with creative capabilities was an important mission of the general university conversion, and it became the goal of the university to lay the foundation for this. Along with the conversion to a general university, HBNU strengthened its internal capabilities by reorganizing its academic structure, establishing an integrated bachelors and masters program, and establishing a general graduate school.HBNUs march toward a bright future is not stopping now. At the 2023 Global Talent Fostering Achievement Presentation in January 2024, the university shared the results of the integrated Global Competency Enhancement through Two-Way Student Exchange project, including the Global Design Thinking Camp, an international capstone design with Iwate University and Chiang Mai University, and exchanges with Kagawa University and the Mongolian National University of Science and Technology. In addition, the university held the Second Phase 3 Leading University in Industry-Academia Cooperation (LINC 3.0) Committee in February 2024 to review the results of the project and present its vision for creating a future of industrial cooperation where companies and regions grow together.A small sprout that began in 1927 in the backwoods of Chungcheongnam-do has grown into a large tree, and its deep-rooted history is still growing. Have you ever heard the saying, A nation that forgets its history has no future? Against the backdrop of its history, HBNU is leading change with its core values of honesty, responsibility, and thoughtfulness. It is also presenting a vision to prepare and lead the 4th Industrial Revolution era by fostering human resources who will lead innovation in human society through the convergence of industry and academia.Link to more detailed biography of HBNU ➜[reference][1] www.hanbat.ac.kr[2] Encyclopedia of Korean Culture

On-Campus Foreign Language Test

  • On-Campus Foreign Language TestBy Lee Ye-rim Reporter, Junior of ChineseTOEIC, TOEIC Speaking, and OPIc. If you are looking for a job, you have probably heard of these tests at least once. But what exactly distinguishes these tests, and how do they assess your English proficiency?TOEIC, short for Test Of English for International Communication, is designed for non-native English speakers to evaluate their communication skills in English. Recognized worldwidely, TOEIC helps evaluate your ability to communicate in English-speaking environments. The TOEIC exam comprises two sections: listening and reading, each with 100 questions, and it lasts around 2 hours. On the other hand, the TOEIC Speaking test is one of the TOEIC exams. Unlike the regular TOEIC test, which uses the Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) paper-based format, the TOEIC Speaking test uses Computer Based Test (CBT) format, where candidates record their spoken responses using a computer. TOEIC Speaking, while similar to OPIc as they are both speaking tests, differs in that TOEIC Speaking has set types of questions. Instead of focusing on chatting skills, it looks at how well you pronounce words, stress, grammar, vocabulary, and how smoothly you use English. Additionally, during the TOEIC Speaking test, you are allowed to take notes to aid your responses.OPIc, or Oral Proficiency Interview-computer is a certified English-speaking test. Candidates record their answers on a computer and experts evaluate them. The test involves recording individual responses to questions using a computer, which is then transmitted to evaluation servers in the United States. Certified assessors evaluate these responses, and that process is considered reliable because it is conducted by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), the administering organization. OPIc tests how good you are at using English in real life situations. OPIc does not have predetermined question types. Instead, questions are randomly selected based on the test-takers background survey, requiring high adaptability and quick thinking. Thus, quick thinking and adaptability are key. OPIc is a popular choice for speaking tests, but keep in mind there is a limit on how many times you can retake it.Currently, Hanbat National University (HBNU) conducts monthly online mock TOEIC tests, with sessions running for the 1st (16:00-18:00) and 2nd (19:00-21:00) with in person tests. As of March 2023, online mock TOEIC Speaking and OPIc programs have been added. These programs allow students to practice with tests closely resembling the real ones. Available to undergraduates and postgraduates on a first-come, first-served basis. These programs come with the added benefit that mock TOEIC scores are recognized for overseas exchange program applications. Registration for mock TOEIC tests is available on the International Exchange Offices website, and it will not cost anything. If you have signed up for an on campus foreign language test, you will get a text three days before the test with all the details you need. However, be aware that the login page (https://entest.co.kr/hanbattest) might look a bit different from what we used to. You will need to use your student ID for both the ID and password. These tests are important for job hunting, the cumulative costs of multiple registrations can be a burden. Fortunately, our universitys mock foreign language proficiency tests are free for students. Seize the opportunity to familiarize yourself with these tests and boost your confidence!
